One month with Galaxy AI: Did it make my life easier?

A recent survey by Samsung revealed that 63% of Kiwis would trust AI to write their dating profile bios. The findings didn’t stop there, with Kiwis saying they trust AI in many aspects of their lives including speaking a different language, help with engaging in conversation and vet future dates.

Following the launch of Galaxy AI, Samsung naturally is keen to see that same trust in its new products, where AI features are said to make life easier. Writer Bernadette Basagre investigates.

If I was to describe my experience with Samsung’s Galaxy AI products in one word, I would pick: smart.

For one month, I was able to try out the new products that joined the Samsung economy, the Z Flip6 and the Z Fold6.

In the lead up to the release of the new products, Samsung marketed that “Galaxy AI” was here. But over recent years, AI has become a buzzword to sell products, so are Samsung’s newest phones just taking part in the fad?

But after my month with Samsung, it is true –  Galaxy AI is here.

The AI features across both the Z Flip6 and the Z Fold6 were beyond helpful, where my personal favourite was the Chat Assist.

With ideas for stories always flowing in my head, especially when driving, I can just bring up Chat Assist at a click of a button and say my ideas to be summarised for me, ensuring I don’t then forget it later down the line.

Another aspect of Chat Assist I really liked is it can convert emails with a lot of technical jargon in to layman’s terms, making it easier to understand.

Browsing Assist also came in handy, defining any words that I didn’t understand while reading online.

As a journalist, features like Transcript Assist transcribed my recorded interviews, saving me money from human transcription services like Rev where it can range between $25 to $80 on a one-hour recording.

The AI transcription service on Rev is a markdown from its human transcriptions at $8-$16 on a one-hour recording.

For the months I used the phones, I dedicated the Z Fold6, with its larger and wider screen, as my device for streaming sites (aka using it to watch Love Island).

This was where I discovered another favourite feature, Circle to Search. When I saw an outfit I liked, it was so easy to circle it and use the AI find me it or something similar to purchase in less than a minute. It was smart and fast.

Out of all the Samsung products, the Galaxy Flip6 was my favourite.

Maybe it is the nostalgia of it being a flip phone and especially hearing the phone shut as you slam it closed.

But what really impressed me about this phone is the camera and the AI photo features that come along with it.

While the phone is shut, you can take photos, and later use features like Photo Assist to edit the photo to your liking.

The resizing and delete entire objects feature within Photo Assist made the photo seem like it wasn’t touched at all.

It has been 10 years since I was a Samsung user, and after using the latest products, it is safe to say it has upgraded beyond my expectations in that time.

I found the AI to be impressive and not gimmicky at all. It encouraged productivity at an efficient and smart level and I believe it will help with people’s daily lives.

On a price point level, an iPhone is cheaper at $1599, but considering the features that comes along with the Z Flip6 ($2099) and the Z Fold6 ($3299), it is definitely worth it.

It is good to note that the Flip6 and the Fold6 accommodate for different uses, and for those who enjoy gaming and watching videos on their smartphone it is best to consider the Z Fold6, notable for its large screen and long lasting battery.

Whereas the Flip6 is reliable as a portable smartphone that has all the Galaxy AI features.

Though I previously said I didn’t need an AI companion with the Oppo Reno 12 review, Samsung’s AI features are far more refined and of use to me.

So, when you’re considering a new phone and if you’re a generally busy person, I highly recommend the Samsung AI economy. The products are fast, efficient and overall smarter than your regular smartphone.
