Red Awards 2017 include call to support retail design

In her presentation speech at the Red Awards, judge Juanita Neville-Te Rito of Retail X encouraged architects, designers, shopfitters and retailers to do what they can to create an environment of “co-opetition” which supports industry members as much as it challenges them.

Michael Eden, president of the Retail Interiors Association, expanded on the same theme of collaboration, saying retailers are under pressure like never before. The advent of Toys “R” Us filing for bankruptcy is a sign of massive change in the retail world, he says, as is the recent entry of multinationals like Zara and H&M and, soon, Uniqlo, to the New Zealand market.

Eden called upon RIA members to help Kiwi retailers as they adjust to this environment: “If we don’t assist the retailers that are here… well, we’re not going to get any money out of Uniqlo and H&M.”

He asked the Red Awards attendees to network, start conversations, and consider how they can provide better value for retailers who are under pressure.

“This industry is so small that we must trust one another,” Eden says. “We collaborate together, we do what we can as a group.”

The supreme winner of the Red Awards 2017, Birkenhead’s Junction Eatery, stood out to judges for its “beautifully-described and visualized concept”. It was designed by Material Creative and completed by shopfitter Alan Jones.

The joinery and detailing also impressed the judging panel, who overall felt Junction Eatery’s interior was a stand-out design in every aspect:

“It doesn’t try too hard to impress, it just does, and has its own confident language that is understated with accents of ‘Wow’ by using natural light, shape and flow.”
