Global financial technology company SumUp recently dived deeper into what makes a place good for entrepreneurs and found this is the best place in New Zealand.
The answer is Auckland, the City of Sails.
How SumUp determined this is by understanding what entrepreneurs need and which city best accommodates this.
These factors include how many millionaires are in that city, quality of life, average income in the city, number of international airports, wifi and mobile speed, new business density based on per 1000 people and even WeWork locations.
Based on this, the best city in New Zealand to be an entrepreneur is Auckland and is ranked 33th globally, beating cities like Beijing, Stockholm, Madrid, Milan and Dublin.
No other New Zealand city makes the top 50 global ranking.
New Zealand has a high entrepreneurial status with over 720,000 registered companies as of March 31, 2024, but Auckland was able to rank high across quality of life, population of millionaires and entrepreneurial spirit.

There are 23,400 millionaires in Auckland, making the City of Sails the 37th highest city in the world with the most millionaires and a new business density of 16.3 per 1000 people.
Entrepreneurial spirit is high with an average online search for terms such as “how to get rich” at 3780 and “how to make it in business” at 4740.
This average makes this the fifth highest in the world.
Monthly average Google searches for the move to Auckland are increasing with an average search of 320 for “moving to Auckland” and 210 on TikTok.
Auckland’s quality of life is ranked at 184.76, putting the city as the 16th highest globally.
The city is great for film production and tourism industries making Auckland one of just twelve of the top fifty cities in the world for entrepreneurs to live in that offers 0% capital gains tax, easing reinvesting and maximising profits for business owners.
