Gaming vs office: where does the Logitech Astro A20 X headset perform best?

Logitech’s Astro A20 X headset is built for gamers, but can you take it to the office? We review the headphones at work and play.

At Logitech G Play (aka Coachella for gamers), Logitech released the A20 X, the latest in the Astro series. Astro is known as the premium gaming headset – so Idealog reporter Zahra Shahtahmasebi and her gamer fiancé Reggie Gregory-Allen put the A20 to the test.

Reggie goes gaming

The Logitech Astro A20 X headset looks futuristic.

Sleek and white, with silver decals, the real magic happens when you turn them on: the earpieces light up. According to Logitech, there’s a palette of 16 million Lightsync RGB colours. These are customisable via the Logitech G Hub app, so you can match your mood, your game or even desk set up.

The headset is so comfortable. Better yet, Zahra says I look cool.

Adjusting the headband wasn’t the easiest, but even set slightly long, the headset still felt good even after hours of gaming. And that’s probably one of the A20 X’s biggest selling points.

The first test is for audio quality, so I play Dizzee Rascal’s ‘Bonkers’. The beat hits hard and even though I’ve turned the volume up, there’s no sound bleed at all.

Next up, a couple of Helldivers and Nightreign sessions with the boys.

I game almost exclusively on a PC with the Sony XM4 headset, so I was intrigued to compare it with the A20 X. Both retail at $399.

My friends immediately said how much better my audio was: “crisp and clear”.

For me, the quality and clarity was exceptional – at least on par with the XM4 – and the sound isolation was great.

The A20 X microphone plugs in with a headphone jack connector. It’s easy to take on and off, but took a bit of getting used to.

Usually, a boom microphone auto-mutes when you push it out of the way. Instead, the A20 X microphone has its own mute button – with a light, so the chat doesn’t fill up with “you’re muted!” messages.

Overall, the A20 X made for an exceptional in-house gaming experience. If I was in the market for a gaming headset specifically, this is the one I’d go for.

Zahra takes it to the office

Putting on the A20 X headset feels like you’re wearing nothing at all.

I frequently get sore ears after an hour or two of wearing headphones, so I was amazed.

Truly, I’ve never worn anything on my head – headsets, headbands or hats – that were this comfortable. Even after I wore them nearly all day while on deadline.

Wearing the A20 X makes me feel super fancy – and, it seems that everyone else seems to think so too. My colleagues commented on how cool they look. “Gamer girl,” said one, as the Lightsync colours caught his eye.

I didn’t actually use these to game – I am the most casual of casual gamers – but just listening to music and watching videos was awesome.

The sound was crisp and clear and I liked that they weren’t totally noise cancelling, so I could wear them in the office but still hear when colleagues wanted my attention.

I was equally impressed with how easy the A20 X is to operate. It turns on with a flick of a button and, if you’re using Bluetooth, connects to the most recently paired device (a helpful automated voice announces “Bluetooth” as it does so).

Switching between connecting to my phone and laptop was simple. No pesky ‘forgetting’ the previous device.

While I’ve only used the headphones in the office, I can also see how they’re perfect for gaming.

And the battery life? Impressive. In the month we’ve both been using the A20 X, we’ve only charged them once – and it’s still sitting at 58%.
