We Love Aotearoa festival hosts never-before-seen VR event

Taking place December 19 and 20, the We Love Aotearoa festival is back with an unmissable line-up of celebrations. Held at Auckland’s ASB Showgrounds, one event festival-goers can experience is the never-before-seen virtual reality event ‘We Love VR’.

From 10am to 3pm on both Saturday and Sunday, attendees can witness the latest in gaming technology. The We Love VR zone will be hosted by New Zealand’s top VR developers who will be demonstrating their titles along with Half-Life: Alyx (R18) across 20 stations.

Founder of Staples VR, Aliesha Staples, says the zone will be a first of its kind at this scale in New Zealand.

The Valve Index which is not yet available in NZ will be showcased across over 20 VR booths giving attendees access to some of New Zealand’s top game developers and Gabe Newall’s new VR game Half Life: Alyx.”

The zone will have a wide range of age-appropriate games to play so that everyone can be involved, including tamariki. Visitors can also enter the draw to win their very own Index VR set by Valve Software as well as a custom-built PC.

The We Love Aotearoa series has been organised by a group of international travellers who found themselves based in Auckland during the Covid-19 pandemic.

During their stay, they have been overwhelmed by the manaakitanga they have received from Kiwis and created the festival as a thank you.

While We Love Aotearoa was postponed from its original date in August due to Covid-19 lockdowns, the group has set a new December date to wrap up the year in style.
