A Day in the Life: Newmarket Business Association CEO Mark Knoff-Thomas

The Newmarket Business Association, which has been around since 1937, describes itself as being the chief champion of “all things Newmarket”. The precinct in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland is home to a plethora of businesses including arts galleries, restaurants and cafes, cinemas and fashion stores. The association’s CEO Mark Knoff-Thomas shares what he loves most about working there.

What does a typical day in the life look like for you?

Every day is very mixed, and no day is typical. I spend time working with my team to understand where things are at with them, and assist with any issues as they arise. Most days I will spend some time talking to property owners, developers and leasing agents – I have put a lot of effort into this in the past few years – this also extends to liaising with retail brands internationally as part of our brand attraction strategy. I will meet with a variety of business owners and operators across the precinct to talk about business, and what’s happening – this anecdotal feedback is a good weathervane. I get regular updates throughout the day on security and crime issues. Most days I have a number of meetings that range from suppliers, politicians, local government representatives, media and other business associations. I have to write a lot – there is always writing to be done – whether it’s reports, media responses, op-eds, advocacy etc. And finally I get invited to a number of events fairly often, so I will go to these as much as is possible.

What inspires you about the work you do at the Newmarket Business Association?

I’m absolutely passionate about the precinct. I have spent most of my life in Auckland living in or near the area and watching its continual evolution is exciting. Newmarket is a diverse community of some of the most incredible people I have ever met. I’m committed to the precinct being a thriving metro-hub.

What changes have you seen in the precinct since your time working there?

The precinct has grown and trade has expanded. The development pipeline is very strong. The economy goes through ebbs and flows, but the creativity, smarts and entrepreneurialism of the business owners here remains inspiring.

In 2025, you were named the PRINZ Communicator of the Year. What did that recognition mean to you?

It was very flattering to be acknowledged by PR people. But to be honest, I do what I do and I say what I say because I believe in what I represent.

How would you describe your leadership style?

I’d like to think my style is about being inclusive, and taking people with me. I always aim to be authentic and real. I’m very values driven, and I am not afraid to call things out.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received in your professional career?

Front foot a crisis.

What does work-life balance look like for you?

That’s a tough question. I work a lot, but I don’t feel like I’m out of balance. My days can start early and end late, but I always manage to get what I need to get done, finished. I take time out when I need to. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve committed more time and energy to my overall wellness.

What is your personal highlight about the work you do?

Seeing young business people start up, and then go on to thrive.
