Bumble hopes to solve NZ’s loneliness problem with new app

Global dating app Bumble has launched a new app in New Zealand all about making friends, dubbed Bumble For Friends.

With Gen Z being digital natives, it has quickly become the norm that the younger generation are used to making friends via social media and gaming platforms.

Bumble wanted to jump on this change in societal norms by making use of their existing product, but shifting it towards a market of friendship making.

“While many people know us as being in the business of romance, friendship is just as important to our mission, which is why we are so excited by the launch of the Bumble For Friends app in New Zealand,” says Lucille McCart, Bumble’s APAC Communications Director.

“We know from our research that the majority of Gen Zs want to make new friends, but they don’t know where to meet people and are intimidated by approaching people IRL (in real life). This is where we step in to make it easier, less awkward, and more fun.”

Taking its dating app Bumble’s work in removing the stigma about meeting people online, the company is ready to broaden this out towards those looking for a friend.

Back in 2016, Bumble introduced a BFF mode and after the success of the feature, the company decided to make a stand-alone app to ensure a new and fun way to connect people with others “while helping solve the extremely important issue of loneliness”.

“Friendship has always been a critical part of Bumble’s goal to living a healthy and happy life,” says Whitney Wolfe Herd, Bumble’s Founder and CEO.

“Having a dedicated Bumble For Friends app that’s separate from the dating experience makes friendship-finding easier for people looking to make meaningful platonic connections in their area.”

Bumble For Friends is now available in the app store and is joining the collection of connection apps under the Bumble umbrella.
