A Day in the Life: The Social Club’s Georgia McGillivray

What time do you wake up?

I wake up whenever I’m ready to get up, it differs every day. I never set alarms unless I have an early morning flight.

What’s the ideal way to start your day?

I walk every morning for 45-60 minutes around the water. The best mornings are when I catch the sun rising over Rangitoto.

Do you have any morning rituals?

Morning walks are my main ritual. I often speak to my family down south on the phone while I’m walking. I try to put off eating breakfast for as long as possible, which usually results in a smoothie in the car on the way to the office.

How soon do you begin doing work-related things, i.e. checking phone or emails?

My phone goes off do not disturb at 7am and I check any new notifications that have come through, and clear my emails. I often have calls scheduled in on my morning walks, so it’s straight into it!

What’s your media consumption or interaction like from the morning onwards – do you listen to podcasts, radio, watch videos, read books and magazines, visit new sites?

If I don’t have any calls, I will listen to podcasts or music on my walks and in the car on the way to work. My favourite podcasts at the moment are Ace the Gram co-founded by one of our influencers Tash Meys and StartUp by Gimlet Media.

What kind of work do you do?

My role is CEO at The Social Club, which I co-founded in 2015. We are experts in creating powerful results-driven influencer campaigns, and helping consumers fall in love with brands.

What responsibility does that involve in a typical day? What takes up most of your time?

Every day is different and can include everything from working on client pitches and campaign strategy, working with our growing team of superstars, HR, finance, reporting, business strategy and every other hat that a CEO wears in a day.

Who do you see/talk to?

I spend majority of my time meeting with our team, our clients (brand, agencies or influencers), our investors, mentors and management team.

Where do your best ideas come from?

Usually when I am away, or out of the office surfing, sailing, swimming or walking I get the most clarity and am able to come up with the best ideas. I’m really lucky to have such a strong support network to run ideas by and go back and forth with.

What are the most important tools or programmes you use for your work?

Slack is the tool we use the most to communicate with our team and clients. We have an awesome CRM and project management tools too. We also have our own internal technology platform that helps eliminate a lot of inefficiencies and pain points such as brand to influencer matching, briefing and contracts, negotiating rates, campaign management, content approval and reporting.

How do you juggle all your responsibilities?

I take each day as it comes and prioritise the must do’s every day. We have an awesome team who help share the responsibilities too.

What kind of breaks do you take throughout the day?

It depends on the day. Often we will have back to backs with no breaks. When I can I try to schedule in breaks or limit the amount of meetings per day.

What’s the most enjoyable part of your day?

Seeing awesome results coming through for our clients.

What about the least enjoyable?

Having to bring my A-game when I’m not on my best form.

Do you procrastinate? Is it good or bad?

To be honest, I don’t really have time to procrastinate. My to-do list is always so long that I have to get stuck in.

Do you measure your accomplishments or productivity? If so, how?

I review my time to check that I’m spend enough time working on important things that will move the needle and prioritise my time based on that.

Is there anything you think is unique about your day?

I eat A LOT of snacks. I’m 100% addicted to apples. Unfortunately I can’t have caffeine which is a blessing and a curse, so I often replace it with sugar in the afternoon. My bag is always filled with “emergency snacks”.

What’s your interaction with friends and family throughout the day? Can you be both a successful entrepreneur and a good mother/partner/friend?

I try to balance my time and but sometimes it can be tough. I’m a big fan of mini breaks to spend quality time offline. I’m lucky to have so many supportive people around me who understand and will call me out if I’m spending too much time online.

Do you get stressed? If so, how do you manage it? Do you practice any mindfulness or meditation?

I have become a lot better at managing stress over the last few years and have my own ways of practicing mindfulness, mostly on the ocean.

What do you do once you get home? Can you switch off?

I try to cook dinner or get outside in the summer and then I’ll usually jump back online. I complete a lot of work in the evenings.

What time do you go to sleep?

My phone goes on do not disturb at 9pm and I go to sleep once I’m tired enough to get to sleep!
