Angel investment hits new record with $60m invested in NZ in 2015

New figures from the latest Young Company Finance Index, published by the New Zealand Venture Investment Fund (NZIF), says that angel networks and funds invested $61.2 million into 94 Kiwi companies across 132 deals in 2015, compared with just $56.4 million across 119 deals in 2014 – a 9% year-on-year increase and new record for the New Zealand investment sector.

2014’s the year where some international startup valuations have gone through the roof, seeing companies such as China’s consumer electronics brand Xiaomi being valued at US$50 billion (NZ$64.2 billion). But is this a global trend that’s hitting New Zealand’s shores (and investor’s wallets)?

Angel investment

Recent figures reveal a fairly dismal angel investment performance in New Zealand over the last five years. The amount of angel funding recorded by the NZ Venture Investment Fund ($50 million in the 2013-2014 year) has barely increased beyond 2009-2010 levels.
