Everyone is leaving NZ, but where are they going?

Between September 2022 to September 2023, just over 70,000 Kiwis left New Zealand to live somewhere else, according to Stats NZ, so how are companies here making up for that loss?

Hiring platform Deel has released a new report detailing the hiring patterns of both New Zealand and the rest of the world, as people move all over the place.

Stats NZ revealed in 2023 that 71,200 Kiwis left for another country, but to make up for it, over 100,000 people arrived in New Zealand.

Deel reveals in their 2024 State of Global Hiring Report that the top job that Kiwi companies are hiring globally for are software developers and engineers.

This is followed by business development salespeople, 3D artists, graphic designers, and web developers.

Topping the most popular role in New Zealand, software developers and engineers also top the list on a global level.

Sales, content, product, and design follow suit.

The top sources of talent that Kiwi companies are hiring from are the Philippines, followed by India and the USA.

“Global hiring is increasingly popular among employers and workers, and expanding beyond technical roles to include sales, content creation, teaching and other services,” says Shannon Karaka, Country Leader of Deel for Australia and New Zealand.

“New Zealand tech firms in particular are increasingly global employers, hiring skills from around the world to support their growth into new international markets.”

Deel’s report is based on its database that spans over 300,000 contracts, 20,000 customers across 160 countries and over 500,000 data points from third-party sources.

Though people are coming in, the statistic for Kiwis leaving New Zealand continues to grow year on year.

Deel reported that the top three countries hiring talent from New Zealand are the USA, the UK, and Australia. The Deel data doesn’t show that Kiwis are relocating to the USA, UK, and Australia.
