Diane Stanbra is the founder of Picnic Box, which (unsurprisingly) puts together individual picnic boxes, with fresh artisan Kiwi ingredients all wrapped up in eco-friendly packaging. As she tells Idealog, finding exceptional people and investing in professional help has been the key to success.
Why did you start Picnic Box?
It was a 3am idea – making picnics for people to enjoy with all the classic picnic food we love without the hassle.
How do you market the biz?
Picnic Box has taken off primarily from word of mouth. Our delighted customers have recommended us to workplaces, friends, sports clubs, schools. We have had lots of great support from the media including Denizen, Metro, Viva, NZ Herald and Stuff. I also work with The ICEHOUSE on my business and their network is invaluable.
Our customers are…
Corporates, event organisers, group tours, weddings, parties, boat trips, or any picnic perfect occasion where many people attend.
Our competitors are…
You could say anyone selling food but we consider ourselves unique – feedback has highlighted that it is the quality, care, convenience and a price point that makes us stand out from anyone.
What lies ahead for Picnic Box in 2014?
Our goal is to build on our unique and exciting brand making Picnic Box the first choice for corporate, wedding and event catering. We are also looking to triple our growth and expand our reach to other New Zealand cities.
The biggest business lesson we’ve learned is…
To be surrounded by exceptional people and get professional help – it will pay back. Our chef Phill is one of those people; he goes above and beyond every day.
Our philosophy is?
Always look to exceed expectations.
