The makings of a great flag

The great flag debate. As New Zealand heads towards a new flag, it’s probably a good idea to think about what makes a well-designed flag.

Considering some of the submissions the Government has received since March this year, it’d be remiss of us here at Idealog to not bring up the subject. Regardless of the debate about whether we should have a new flag or not, one thing we can all agree on is the need for a well-designed flag.

Roman Mars, the host and producer of 99% Invisible, a radio show and podcast on design and architecture, gave a talk at TED earlier this year in March precisely on this subject. While focusing on municipal city flags, the principles are the same. Let's not recreate the disaster of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, yes?
