A platform that gives tenants the big tick is the winner of the latest Auckland Startup Weekend, where 12 teams pitched to judges.
Trusty Tenants is a soon to be released service designed to save property managers time processing tenant applications and help tenants find a house more quickly.
The team won three months part-time residence at GridAKL, $10,000 free advertising from TradeMe, a Lowndes Jordan startup law pack, a free one year Xero account, a US$200 Amazon Web Services voucher, three months Gold subscription to Audible (including four audiobooks) from Microsoft, space at BizDojo Auckland, Massey University’s ecentre, The Bio Commerce Centre in Palmerston North, CreativeHQ and Upstart.
Trusty Tenants was followed by runners up My Food Life, a source of food for those with out of the ordinary dietary requirements.
Judge Rod Snodgrass awarded Writers Reveal the prize for the most disruptive business model with the potential to go global. The team created an online platform to helps creative writers promote themselves and get recognition from publishers.
Among the other ideas pitched were Couchstand, a platform that gives sports fans the opportunity to become part of the crowd. Judge Candace Kinser said the company had identifying “an incredible niche space in an export market with a great business model and great design.”
Another judge, Victoria Crone, said the HazHat venture was an innovative solution to a critical problem. It’s a workplace safety management offering.
“The energy and enthusiasm for startup weekend in New Zealand, with high demand for tickets and sold out events, flows into the broader startup ecosystem,” says facilitator Rowan Yeoman. “People that have participated in Startup Weekend are more capable and experienced, better networked and ultimately more likely to succeed.”
Eighty-two entrepreneurs took part, with 27 ideas initially pitched.
The next Auckland Startup Weekend will be in November, preceded by an education-themed event in Wellington in August.
