The co-chairman of innovation thinktank Deloitte’s Center for the Edge doesn't necessarily buy the niche fragmentation theory, but he does reckon it's time companies take the importance of customer relations and creating value seriously.
What makes for a successful company today, he says, is the flexibility to adapt. While businesses have traditionally worked to a "push" model (in which they anticipate demand, then line up all their ducks in order to meet that need), a "pull" model may now be more appropriate. That means reaching out and connecting with people and resources as needed, not just with a handful of select partners but a much wider network.
He also touches on issues of scaleability and the opportunities afforded by ditching institutionalised practices. Change may be painful, but time stands still for no one.
Of course, technology also blurs the line between the office and home. While Hagel is an advocate of following passion into a profession, he says balancing the work/life spheres deserves more than just lip service.
