The electricity, oil, gas and petroleum industries convened last week for the 2012 Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards, where Mighty River Power won three prizes including Overall Energy Company of the Year.
According to the judging panel, Mighty River Power’s strong retail performance, combined with its successful international expansion, set it apart. Mighty River Power’s chief executive Doug Heffernan was also recognised as the Energy Executive of the Year, and its Glo-Bug pay-as-you-go consumer system won the Innovation in Electricity category.
Powershop, however, was named energy retailer of the year.
Meanwhile, Orion was recognised with the Excellence in Health and Safety award for its emergency preparedness and ongoing support provided to staff and contractors, during the major earthquakes in the Christchurch region in 2011.
Guest of honour, energy and resources minister Phil Heatley, says the New Zealand energy sector is an essential part of the country’s infrastructure and makes a significant contribution to the economy.
“A thriving and high-achieving energy sector is essential to a growing economy and to improve the standard of living of New Zealanders ... Best practice is what the sector should be aspiring to, and when it is achieved we should celebrate that."
