The lowdown on this year's Auckland Startup Weekend

Auckland Startup Weekend is back for a third year and it's slated to be hosted at the ecentre on the North Shore from June 15-17.

Building on a successful international model, Startup Weekend brings together developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts to form to work on building and launching products and services.

There have been 468 Startup Weekends around the world so far, including in Wellington and Christchurch with more planned.

The weekend begins with open mic pitches on Friday. Over Saturday and Sunday, teams work to design and develop business plans, prove their concept and streamline their vision with support from entrepreneurs and experts from different fields. On Sunday evening the teams demo their prototypes and receive feedback (and potentially, prizes).

While any business ideas are eligible, the event is strongly tech-oriented because of the need to generate an early prototype in a short period of time – prior events have had a high proportion of mobile or web focused startup ideas.

The winning team from 2011 Startup Weekend Auckland, TranscribeMe, is continuing to pick up momentum, recently pitching in Singapore at DEMO Asia.
