The Seafood ITO and the NZITO (meat and dairy sector) are investigating a full merger of the two organisations.
The combined entity would service a workforce of over 60,000 people nationally, covering three key export industries – meat, dairy and seafood.
In a statement, the organisations said the idea of an integrated primary sector ITO had been kicking around for some time.
The benefits would include coordination of efforts, financial stability, and greater efficiency.
A merger would be in line with the trend towards a whole-of-sector view, such as the formation of a Ministry of Primary Industries.
Staff have been informed of the decision and a date for the merger will be announced once set, with a final decision expected by the end of May.
