Proud to be an Aucklander: Ray Avery

Everybody loves to hate on the JAFA. But is Auckland finally starting to find its feet? This week, we chat to a few people who are Aucklanders by birth, choice or both – and proud of it.

Ray AveryI grew up in … London and Southern England

I moved here in … 1973

And stayed because …. For me, it's the most beautiful city in the world

I'm a proud JAFA because … Auckland is a great example of a truly integrated multinational society – so very rare on the world stage

The one thing I'd change about the city is … The motorways. We need some serious urban planning and a sexy rail system

My favourite hidden gem is Karaka Bay: a little bit of the East Cape in the suburbs

The best coffee can be foundat Orvieto Cafe, Mt Eden

Wynyard Quarter is … On the way to becoming a world-class venue but needs more work

And the RWC wasA great example of what we can do, if we believe in ourselves and our city

Auckland traffic makes meWork from home and never go to the North Shore if I can avoid it

Auckland in three words is Heaven on earth ... how lucky are we?
