Pillow talk

YHA Christchurch/YHA New Zealand accepting their award

Reusing your old pillowcases as bin liners may seem, well, odd, but it is officially an award-winning activity.

The Sustainable Business Network held its southern regional awards on 21 August, recognising businesses with sustainable practices including economic growth, social equity and environmental management.

The four recipients—Nomad Safaris, Tasman Bay Vets, YHA Christchurch City/YHA New Zealand, and CarboNZero—must wait over the next few weeks to see who their northern counterparts will be, then all the regional winners will battle it out in the NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards in Auckland on 9 October.

And those rubbish-filled pillowcases? A novel idea in use at YHA youth hostels.
