Vodafone's new music app, launched to capitalise on hype around its sponsored New Zealand Music Awards event last night, offers Kiwi music fans a subscription model for getting new tracks.
The app offers a constantly updated Official Top 40, emerging songs, a playlist of top 10 Kiwi artists and other event-specific playlists. It's rounded out with music and celebrity news and the ability to get more info on a track, share it or buy it from 7digital, the network of web-based music stores.
It's a white label version of the UK-based Musicqubed platform, which uses a subscription model so users can access updated content within the app once they've downloaded it.
Musicqubed works with Vodafone on the curated playlists.
"When we spoke to our customers about what they like they said it had to be affordable," says Vodafone's head of mobile Zac Summers. "We're delivering this at half the price of premium subscription services out there. And wanted to make sure it didn't take up massive amounts of data."
He adds its consumers like the convenience of set playlists, rather than "having to trawl through a million songs".
Vodafone is offering its customers a free four week trial of the Android and iOS app, and after that they pay $6 a month. Users of other networks get a free two weeks trial, then pay $8.29 per month.
The telco is also a sponsor of the Rhythm Group music festivals. "The summer of music starts at this time of year. This is a time when people start using and consuming more music," says Summers.
