Engineering feats rewarded at Innovate NZ

A raft of projects from around the country have been awarded top honours in the Innovate NZ Awards of Excellence 2012 for feats of engineering and technology.

Judges selected five gold winners from 38 finalists: Beca for a radar training simulator for the RNZAF’s upgraded Orion aircraft;  Tonkin & Taylor for the massive task of assembling a 400-strong land damage assessment team in Christchurch; Holmes Fire for fire engineering at Britomart East/Westpac Charter House; Beca for HVAC Integrated Design for the Alan McDiarmid Building at Victoria University; and MWH New Zealand for its internationally acclaimed KiwiRAP Star Rating New Zealand Road Assessment Programme.

The awards are held by the Association of Consulting Engineers New Zealand.

Convenor of judges Allan Leahy said that there had been a very high standard of projects entered for the awards, many representing examples of world-leading applications of technology.

“To receive a Gold Award of Excellence, the highest of the three awards, the project must demonstrate real innovation – perhaps a new process that will establish the standard for years to come - and excellent customer service,” said Leahy.

From an urban design perspective, two projects completed ahead of the Rugby World Cup were honoured: intelligent street lights – that can be monitored, metered, and controlled from anywhere around the world – installed around Eden Park snagged Opus a Merit, and Tonkin & Taylor's design and implementation of a tram around Wynyard Quarter also qualified for a Merit.

Holmes Consulting Group was praised for its wave-form roof on the Viaduct Events Centre, which required comprehensive analysis to ensure its structural success, winning silver, as did Sinclair Knight Merz for the Forsyth Barr Stadium project, a world first that saw a permanently closed roof over a natural turf field
