QuakeSurfer suspension system launched in Wellington

QuakeSurfer is not the latest Marvel character, but a pioneering piece of engineering developed by the Victoria University of Wellington, Dunning Thornton, MJH Engineering and Robinson Seismic. 

The suspension system, which officially launched last week and is now commercially available, is designed to protect highly valuable assets, such as generators, data centres and sensitive equipment. And tests have shown that QuakeSurfer can protect from up to 90 percent of the forces generated by earthquakes.

What makes QuakeSurfer a world first is its ability to mitigate vertical acceleration, which in the case of Christchurch's February 2011 earthquake was as significant as the horizontal acceleration.

The system works using torsion bars "like the suspension on older cars" protecting from vertical acceleration. There are also low gliders to protect against horizontal acceleration, offering "360 degrees" of protection against seismic activity.

QuakeSurfer was highly commended at the 2013 Earthquake Strengthening Awards.
