From Mountain Buggy to LeisurePod

Mountain Buggy founder Allan Croad is back with the LeisurePod, an all-in-one trailer solution for transport, storage and even camping.

We love gadgets here at Idealog HQ, and we particularly love the outdoors. So when we saw the LeisurePod, we were tickled pink and wanted to take it for a burn around the block.

The LeisurePod is the solution to the outdoor problem for people who have an ordinary car but don’t want to invest heavily in camping gear.

Ordinarily you’d have to sleep on the ground in a little two-man tent with condensation streaming down the walls and insects keeping you up at night, but the Pod offers a better way.

The Pod is the brainchild of entrepreneurs Allan Croad and Harm Croenen. Croad is the creator of the Mountain Buggy, which won numerous European design awards and became a multi- million dollar export business.

Croad and Croenen did heaps of research, checking out all manner of outdoor gear. They saw lots of camper trailers but none that were truly lightweight, comfortable and easy to use for novice campers.

Cue the LeisurePod.

It’s design-protected with the New Zealand patent office, as is the LeisurePod trade mark, says Croad.

“The idea came out of a mix of trying to find a project to keep me busy after the large ‘gap’ left in my life following the sale of my Mountain Buggy business some seven years ago,” he says.

“I had done a reasonable amount of camping in the past and in the process always found my mind busy with ideas of how the camping process may be improved.”

The LeisurePod is made out of composite fibreglass with canvas walls and fits into an open box trailer.

"You can store gear safe and dry when not in use, take garden rubbish in the open box trailer or transport luggage in the LeisurePod. With the sofa-bed in place you can sleep overnight in the great outdoors or have a picnic day at a favourite location," Croad says.

There are also extras including a front storage box, roof rack, clip-on table and more shelter options in the form of an awning, vestibule tent and side shelter to keep the sun or rain off.

"It only weighs 230kg which means it’s easy to hook up and tow with a medium size car."

The LeisurePod will be on show to the public for the first time at the Covi Motorhome, Caravan and Outdoor Supershow this month at the ASB Showgrounds.
