K Rd collaboration soon to celebrate three years of uncovering fresh creative talent

Karangahape Road’s image as an edgy centre for Auckland’s creative types has only strengthened since the creation of First Thursdays.

First Thursdays is a community-conscious collaboration of artisans and art lovers whose ultimate goal is to showcase new and exciting talent in the fields of visual arts, music and performance.

Founded by Cleo Barnett and funded by the K Road Business Association, the event aims to connect people with each other through art, performance and ideas.

The free event, run three times a year, turns three years old in December and can toast the injection of some much-needed sense of community into the city centre, while showing off its talented residents.

Barnett, formerly of Seattle, was inspired to bring the event from her hometown to our shores.

“When I moved to New Zealand I thought this event would be a fun edition to the art scene.

“The first event was held within St Kevin’s arcade and each event has grown in venues. It now takes place across more than 25 venues and is growing with each event.”

The next First Thursdays event is on December 6 and, as always, is free to enter.
