Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards a coastal affair

From the Coromandel to Hamilton, award-winning architecture popped up 18 times at last night’s Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards.

Coastal properties fared well, with all seven residential winners located within 500 metres from the coastal strip. Commercial buildings also put in a strong performance, with the Don Rowlands Centre in Cambridge, Te Kauwhata Library and the new Papamoa College all picking up awards.

Architect and convenor of the awards jury, Adam Mercer, said the jury was particularly impressed by two medical projects that depart from traditional institutional approaches. The jury described Braemar Hospital by Chow:Hill Architects as “an environment more akin to a restful hotel than a traditional hospital”, and said that at the Cancer Society’s Lions Lodge the same firm had made “a large building feel like home”.

Having toured around all the properties in contention for an award, Mercer said it was “obvious” that good clients equal good buildings, regardless of budget. “And there’s another lesson from the jury’s tour – get a good builder and pay him what his skill deserves.”

And now, onto the winners.
