Next month a bunch of top Kiwi brains are taking to the road for the Innovation Heroes tour - think wine, canapés and inspiring stories straight from the horse's mouth. Rod Snodgrass, Penelope Barr-Sellers, David Darling and Shona Grundy - will share their journeys of building businesses, leading businesses and advocating for young talent and innovation.

Today, we meet Rod Snodgrass, the head of Telecom Digital Ventures - a business unit formed in early 2013 to look at new technologies, consumer needs and business opportunities.

rod snodgrass innovation heroes​Previously the chief product officer at Telecom, he has a strong background in internet, broadband and mobility, including with Ericsson Cellular, and Xtra and the fixed line division in Telecom. He's also been on the Mobile World Capital Advisory Board, Telco Futures Forum and Southern Cross Cables Board.

What does innovation mean to you? 

Innovation to me means new ways of thinking and doing things  that result in positive change.

What is it that gets you up in the morning? 

To deliver consumers experiences that they love… and ultimately create value for them and the business.

What is the most valuable piece of advice anyone has ever given you?

Do what you believe is right and work with people you respect.

Who have been your most influential role models?

A number of people from family, friends,, co-workers and bosses (who I don’t want to embarrass) and the odd famous person who has vision and courage.

What is one big mistake you’ve made and what did you learn from it?

I have made many mistakes and I still do….. I am always learning.

What are the key ingredients/qualities do you think that got you where you are today?

Curiosity, impatience, energy and a belief that people are good and things can always be better.
