In ‘The Wizard of Oz’, Dorothy arrives in the Emerald city and marvels at its vastness, its audacity and its opulence – as long as she is wearing tinted glasses. I was reminded of this on my recent work trip to Dubai, a city which may not be Emerald, but if the gold plated iPad covers for sale in the shop near the office are anything to go by, may be even more over the top.

The English love a good queue. I managed to experience a good number of them over the past week in a very busy London, and was surprised to see how content the locals were to stand in line – for theatre tickets, for drinks at a bar, for food, for the underground… anything.

International trade

In an ironic twist of fate, Idealog columnist and NZTE executive David Downs flew in and out of the Chilean capital Santiago just hours before the 8.3 magnitude quake hit the country on Thursday. The column he wrote while he was there, little knowing the disaster that was about to unfold, gives cultural, political and business insights into a country about to suddenly and unwillingly find itself in the international news spotlight.
