Op ed: Household solar becoming a bright idea

In New Zealand, power companies charge households roughly 25 to 30 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for power, but only buy back at a rate of 6 to 8 cents per kWh for power generated by solar panels. And why not? When the customer sells back to the grid they become, essentially, a wholesaler. Like any retailer, you expect a mark-up to be made on the product you are selling—that is how business works.
