Build It Right campaign launched to keep us on top of regulation changes

Changes are afoot in the building industry and the Department of Building and Housing has launched
a two-year campaign, Build It Right, to keep regular Joes in the loop.
The first major change is the introduction of Restricted Building Work
(RBW) on March 1. This means most residential building work
requiring a building consent must be carried out by licensed building practitioners (LBP). That includes designers, carpenters, roofers, external plasterers, brick and blocklayers, and foundation specialists. Professional architects, engineers, plumbers and gasfitters are treated as LBPs and can carry out some restricted building work.
Department of Building and Housing sector capability deputy chief
executive Alison Geddes says the programme of work being introduced over
the coming months will raise standards in the sector while doing away
with unnecessary red tape.
“The first step has been to ensure we have enough LBPs assessed within a
range of competencies relating to their licence class. Only they will
be able to carry out RBW which is design and construction work critical
to the integrity of a building,” Geddes says.

how is adding another layer of checks (and expensive checks at that) going to reduce the 'red tape'. Council already makes it nigh on impossible to carry out any kind of renovation without forking out a fortune in consent fees, without adding another obstacle to the process.
