Pacific pews
By Lauren Bartlett,
Old and modern are fused with oak and matai
Hawkes Bay-based designer Kennedy Brown has combined traditional with contemporary to create Pacific-themed furniture for a South Auckland church.
The series, titled Sanctuary Furniture, was commissioned by architect Tony Orgias for the new St Peter Chanel Church and Community Centre. Brown, who works in local furniture design incubator Cicadastudios, used a combination of oak and matai to pay homage to traditional churches and add a New Zealand feel.
“I generally like to take elements from the past and reinvent them with modern materials and processes,” says Brown, who is hoping to get prototypes of his furniture into local stores by June.
