It's a game

Originally published in Idealog #19, page 86

How does innovation become a way of life? That was AG Lafley’s urgent question when he became CEO of Procter & Gamble in 2000.

The Game Changer outlines the principles that Lafley and other innovation leaders have discovered in systematising innovation for sustained organic growth. We benefit from Lafley’s hindsight, and co-author and consultant Ram Charam’s rigorous analysis of what makes innovation more than just a one-off miracle. It’s possible to build innovation into every part of your company; this book gets you on that path. It progresses through leveraging your existing strengths, changing culture and structure to enable innovation and remove silos, and being just as good at killing the wrong idea as supporting the right idea.

While this book is written about some of the world’s largest corporations, it’s applicable to any company that has scale enough to spare a few full-time staff to explore new things and bring back insights.

It’s not a foolproof formula, nor does it claim to be. But it is an opportunity to learn from the successes—and failures—of world-leading companies who are rediscovering entrepreneurship.
