Spirited away
By Gena Tuffery,
Who says fashion isn’t deep?
TheNewDowse is promising its show of 50 years of German fashion photography will provide a good look at “changes in society, codes of morality, the role of women and the hopes and ideals of people at the time”. Right. Sounds like a good excuse to tear down the bookshelves and extend your wardrobe.
But the ‘Zeitgeist Becomes Form’ exhibition isn’t all visual social commentary. There are lots of pretty clothes in there too—from all the big names like Christian Dior and Issey Miyake. And you may recognise the signatures of the people who snapped them. Heard of Helmut Newton?
Zeitgeist means spirit of the times, and its namesake exhibition proves that spirit can be captured. It’s at the Dowse till February 3.
