The skatewear label is pulling some nice new moves

Magazine layout

With competition waiting at the end of every half-pipe, starting up a skatewear label is hardly a risk-free move. But it’s one that’s paid off for Nick and Jenny Clegg, who launched Federation Clothing out of their apartment seven years ago.

The label has become New Zealand’s first to be nominated for a Sportswear International Fashion Award (SIFA). “We’re up against some pretty big names,” says Nick Clegg. You could say that—adidas and Converse aren’t exactly obscure.

But even if Federation doesn’t grab the gold, the nomination is a huge coup for the husband and wife team. “The award has already opened a lot of doors and has given us a launchpad, particularly in the US market,” says Nick Clegg—who happened to be speaking with buyers in New York when the finalists were announced.

While the Fed founders are excited about the award, they don’t have a lot of time to think about it. They’ve been busy opening their new flagship store in Britomart, as well as putting competition to one side to work on a charity collaboration with adidas. Nice moves.
