Inspiration from the humble supermarket cart

The 'Pedro' stool

The Pedro stool

Last year the Candywhistle team designed the interior of a new fashion boutique in Auckland, using supermarket trolleys as display units. Designer Craig Bond realised that the process of manufacturing the trolleys could be utilised in other ways. After meeting with the manufacturer, he designed a new range of stackable stools that are lightweight and cost-effective to make.

“It was completely different starting with the process, and then working back to a design that worked,” says Bond. “I was very limited with what I could do, but it was fantastic to work within a set of rules. It became like an informal brief.”

The ‘Pedro’ stools (left) are already available in Auckland and Wellington. Bond also plans to take them to the Milan Furniture Fair next year.
