The Red Bull trolley race for the brave and the bold and the foolhardy

Returning to New Zealand on November 22 for the fifth time, the Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix is an event that combines a dash of Kiwi ingenuity, bit of a death wish, some dubious engineering and free-spirited design.

With a challenging racetrack winding through the Auckland Domain, the competition will see a total of 50 teams of five from around New Zealand competing in the race. According to Red Bull, only the “most incredible trolley designs that really stand out from the pack will be selected to race.”

Designs from the 2013 event included everything from a full sized bull, Bert and Ernie (from Sesame St.), a Transformer, a military helicopter, ‘Chitty Bang’, a Smurf-mobile, and even a catamaran.

Applications have only recently opened, and with 44 days to go, Red Bull are seeking trolley designers with the most creative flair. The winning entry will collect a $10,000 cash price.

Race day will be held on November 22. More information on entry can be found here.
