Shopping centres take centre stage at the Property Council New Zealand awards

t the black-tie event on Friday, Sistema’s new industrial manufacturing facility in Mangere, Auckland, won the coveted Supreme Award. Chief judge Andrew Evans described the 55,000 square metre facility as world-class.

“The functionality of the design ensures a smooth and logical flow of materials, people, and resources through the production process, facilitating the efficient operation of a world-class business,” he said.

More than 1500 property professionals attended the awards.

The finalists for the RCG Retail Property Award were:

  • Caro’s Grey Lynn (Auckland)
  • David Jones (Wellington)
  • Papamoa Plaza (Tauranga)
  • Whangaparoa Retail Centre (Auckland)

Of these, Whangaparoa Retail Centre received a ‘Merit’ award. It’s owned by FML Retail Limited and Foodstuffs North Island, and was developed by Foodstuffs North Island. New World is the site’s anchor tenant, and it also houses 16 further retail tenants in two blocks covering 2.15 hectares.

RCG managing director John Long said that the lack of a ‘Best in Category’ or ‘Excellence’ award in the retail category should not be seen as evidence of low standards in retail developments, saying RCG believed retail property and shopping centres were doing well.

“There can be an array of reasons why people in the retail industry do not enter the awards, it is as simple as the timing of the awards does not match the completion of projects,” Long says. “There are a number of outstanding new retail centres and expansions to retail centres that are likely to be entered in next year’s awards.”

“We have sponsored the “retail category” for a number of years and felt the turnout at the PCNZ Awards on Friday was fantastic and we are proud to be part of the celebrations.”
