Check out the Red Awards 2016 winners

The supreme winner of this year’s Red Awards was a hospitality space – Hayes Common Eatery in Hamilton. Run annually by the Retail Interiors Association, the awards celebrated the best of 2016’s retail design and shopfitting work on Saturday at Mantells on the Water, Auckland.

In his introduction, Retail Interiors Association vice president Mark Tyrrell spoke of a record number of entries for the 2016 Red Awards, calling them “world class”. He also hinted at the likelihood of establishing a category for sustainable design next year.

Tyrrell farewelled former executive officer Rebekah Heal after 10 years with the association, and welcomed her sucessor Kate Douglas.

The judging panel for this year’s Red Awards was The Warehouse Group executive Matt Hadley, Scentre Group executive Gabrielle Bevin-Smith and retail marketing expert Juanita Neville-Te Rito. Television presenter Petra Bagust MC’d the event.

Neville-Te Rito spoke of “truly unique,” “brave,” “innovative, modern and imaginative” entries when she described the task the judges faced in deciding on a winner. She says the disruption faced by retailers over the last few years has resulted in an opportunity to innovate, which the winning designers and shopfitters had grasped with both hands.

While retail clients are now embracing digital opportunities, they are also coming to understand the importance of bricks and mortar stores in creating connections with customers, Neville-Te Rito says.

“The enduring truth about customers is that they love emotional connections – they love to taste and touch and feel.”

“Tonight is a celebration of the art of retail.”
