New cafe and bar for Takapuna beach site

Franc’s is a casual dining site right on Takapuna beach in Auckland’s North Shore, boasting uninterrupted views to Rangitoto across the adjacent park, beach, and waterfront.

The cafe is first of three hospitality venues in the new Main Beach Takapuna development now being completed on The Strand.

Interior architect and design agency Ctrl Space (Kokako, Citizen Park, Sweat Shop, Scarlett Slimms and Lucky) designed the interior of Franc’s, which includes a bar, walk-up booth to order takeaway fish chips and burgers, beach-facing terrace seating, a raised open kitchen serving casual and bistro-style food, and dining areas oriented to the ocean view.

The design was inspired by beachside food and beverage vendors and eateries in the US. Hero design elements include the wooden take-away booth (inspired by traditional beach huts), and chandeliers made of beach umbrellas to create a sense of fun.

Polished concrete floors at the bar and old-school picnic benches on the terrace cue casual dining and summertime drinks.

Ctrl Space principal Chris Stevens says the Franc’s site is unique, and the design capitalises on its stunning view and location.

“We designed Franc’s to be the ultimate beachside bar and pavilion,” says Stevens. “We hope it quickly becomes a established part of Takapuna’s beach culture.”

Franc’s will open its doors just before Christmas.
