And the award goes to… announcing the winners of the PANZ Book Design Awards

Bold decision-making, colour that perfectly captures the time period of the subject matter, a complete design that has considered every detail – these are some of the qualities that made Modern: New Zealand Homes from 1938 to 1977, designed by Arch MacDonnell of Inhouse Design, the winner of best book at the PANZ Book Design Awards last night.

Judges said: “Bold decision-making has made this book really stand out in a crowded genre. Choices around the typography and colour perfectly capture the time period of the subject matter represented in the book, yet make it utterly contemporary.

“The jacket hides a wonderfully bold piece of stacked typography on the cover, deeply embossed into the linen case. It not only says ‘Modernism’ but ‘70’s’, ‘design’ and ‘architecture’ simultaneously.

“One can only surmise that the publisher lost their nerve to conceal such a standout piece of typography that delighted everyone who discovered it.

“Dig below the surface of the perfectly balanced jacket to discover the stunning case design and connecting endpaper. This is a complete design that has considered every detail and is the stronger for it.”
