After weeding through nearly 1,600 image submissions, Getty Images has picked Aucklander Jamie Wright as the winner of Grab New Zealand, a photography competition that gave enthusiasts the world over the opportunity to show off their visual definition of everyday Kiwi life.

Judged by a panel of New Zealand photographers and industry experts, Wright's winning photograph was taken at Hahei beach on the Coromandel Peninsula. It depicts a part of everyday life for local boating enthusiasts who, without a tractor, could not otherwise launch their boats on the soft sand.

Says Wright: "With fair weather, the beach quickly turns into a parking lot, making interesting photographs of tractors old and new, randomly aligned along the beach waiting for their owners to return from a day out at sea.”

Mazdak Radjainia from Auckland was the runner up for capturing the powerful, raw beauty of New Zealand’s underwater world in his image taken outside the Hokianga entrance on the North Island.

Overwhelmed by the high standard of entries, the judges also acknowledged Célia Mendes’ landscape taken on the Diamond Lake Track in Wanaka and Nicolas Holzheu’s black and white image of skaters at Wellington’s 2009 Bowl-A-Rama with highly commended awards.

The People’s Choice Award, which invited the public to vote for their favourite image, was awarded to Andy Lukey, who captured the essence of summer with his powerful image of surf at Sumner beach.

“We were really impressed by the quality and variety of images that were submitted, providing a glimpse of the everyday life and moments that make New Zealand so very unique,” said Hannah Johnston, Grab judge and staff photographer for Getty Images. “Jamie’s winning image showed originality and thought, illustrating New Zealand life in a simple and effective way which followed the brief perfectly.”

The winner walked away with a Canon EOS 7D 18-135IS and the runner up received a Canon 600D 18-55IS & 55-250IS.  The recipient of the People’s Choice Award was awarded the Canon PowerShot G12.
