A quick word with ... Designer Emma Parnell

Packaging designer and freelance writer Emma Parnell has a bit of an addiction to her Mac – and Mad Men.

My day starts with ...
A half an hour walk to the office up the length of Symonds St. It makes me feel like a student again waltzing through the university every morning. When the sun is shining it's a much better way to start the day than my previous London Tube experience.

And ends with ...
I'm currently leafing through Sagmeister's Things I've learnt in my life so far. Like most designers my age he was my first design crush, and I still like to indulge now and again. I try to survive sans Mac for a few hours before bed, unless my new Mad Men addiction sucks me in.

And in between ...
I'm a packaging designer by day, wannabe journalist by night. I live a cloak-and-dagger double life, similar to a crime-fighting superhero. I haven't got a cape yet but I'm working on it.

I'm inspired by ...
Great ideas and great thinking, whatever form it may take.

My first ever job was ...
My very first was the classic teenage occupation of delivering free papers around my suburban neighbourhood – this being infinitely worse than a regular paper round due to having to insert 3-8 pieces of junk mail into each paper and consequently the bag being five times heavier! The credit for my first step into the real world of design goes to Bulletproof in London.

My finest moment ...
Wow, a tough one. Can I pick two? The first would be landing that first job as a designer. After hours trawling old copies of Creative Review in the library, printing and crafting a huge pile of CVs and two months as an errand girl/placement, someone finally wanted to pay me. Thanks Gush!

My second would be the moment I stepped off the plane at Auckland airport. I had moved to the other side of world, by myself ... it was
pissing down but I felt great! Please note I am currently unmarried and sans children hence a geeky career-focused answer to this question!

My website in three words is ...

Discerning antipodean design.
