Who: E E Hoag

Innovation: Feather duster

What does it do?

Removes dusts from all sorts of household surfaces.

What problem does it solve?

The story goes that a farmer took a bundle of turkey feathers into a broom factory in Iowa in 1870, and asked if they could be made into a brush. Hoag stole the farmer's thunder and invented the first feather duster; the Hoag Duster Company was founded in 1874. The feather duster allows you to remove dust from all those hard to reach places, like in between ornaments and such. The beauty of it is that you don't need to shift the objects to dust around them.

A success?

I guess it depends on your attitude towards cleaning …
