Simcro animal health device scoops Good Design prize

Hamilton design manufacturer Simcro has notched a prize in the medical and scientific category at Australia’s Good Design awards.

It won for the Multi-Dose Intramammary Applicator and Magazine System device, a packaging and delivery platform for intramammary medication provided by Merial Ancare.

The two companies say they challenged traditional intramammary syringe design, which hadn’t changed in basic form in 30 years.

“The design brief for this project was to develop a better, faster, more comfortable system for farmers to treat dairy cows with intramammary dry cow medications,” they say.

Simcro surveyed dairy farmers when developing the design brief and found farmers wanted a complete cow treatment in a single magazine, which it says is a big change from single-shot syringes which require one syringe for each of a cow’s four quarters.

The design uses the whole hand in a natural squeeze of the handle to improve mechanical assistance, it says.

“The ergonomics of the handles ensure that large groups of animals can be treated in a comfortable action that reduces repetitive strain injury. Once the magazine is inserted into the applicator there is no further handling required. As the magazine is advanced, the caps are automatically disengaged.”

Simcro specialises in customised animal health delivery solutions to the pharmaceutical industry. It has about 30 projects under development for global animal health companies.

The company exports over 90 percent of its products to more than 65 countries.
