Cracking the Calligraffiti code
By Siobhan Leathley,
The first Designers Speak event of the year is fast coming up and the guest of honour at Calligraffiti will be Amsterdam's Niels Shoe Meulman.
Meulman's career began when he started tagging 'Shoe' in 1979 and became a graffiti legend by the time he was 18. He continued to fine-tune his technique during the 90s, apprenticed
under graphic design expert Anthon Beeke and ran his own design company, Caulfield &
Tensing.
He also revolutionised the art of writing with Calligraffiti, an art form that fuses calligraphy and graffiti, launched in 2007 with a massive solo exhibition in Amsterdam. Since then, his Calligraffiti pieces (signed NSM) have been shown in various international exhibitions and are part of several museum collections.
His more recent painting style, he says, can be described as ‘"abstract expressionism with a calligraphic origin".
