Frankfurt Book Fair pavilion contract the ‘chance of a lifetime’

Award-winning architecture firm Patterson Associates is set to lead a consortium of some of New Zealand’s most creative content developers in delivering New Zealand’s pavilion at the 2012 Frankfurt Book Fair.

The group tasked with creating the 2,500-square-metre pavilion includes furniture designer David Trubridge and events company Inside Out Productions. Inside Out was behind Tourism New Zealand’s giant rugby ball in Paris, London and Tokyo.

New Zealand will be the guest of honour at the fair, which is the world’s largest trade fair for books and media.

The five-day expo attracts 300,000 visitors and 10,000 international journalists each year. The government hopes that New Zealand’s exposure during this event will lead to increased tourism.

"For Pattersons, being able to create something sensational to show off New Zealand's extraordinary talent and attributes in the middle of the world's largest trading place for creative content is simply the chance of a lifetime," said director Andrew Patterson.

Okay - so as someone who as actually been to the Frankfurt Book Fair (oh yeah I get around) it is NOT a 'trade show' in the Trade NZ sense. It is a highbrow event where deals are made based on established relationships in the publishing and media industry. All the David Trubridge lights and loungers in the world won't change that. Sure it might tweak the interest of a few jaded journos doing the rounds but as to the ludicrous idea that it will lead to 'tourism'??? Please - if you are just going to repeat the press release from Ministry of Heritage and Culture - then do that. Don't report PR as fact when you have no facts to back it up!

What do you think?
